Minister of Education and Skills Development, Pelonomi Venson –Moitoi has revealed that her ministry needs at least 16 000 housing units to accommodate the country’s 26 000 teachers who are currently living in deplorable conditions.
Speaking during BTV’s The Eye programme on Tuesday evening, Moitoi said she was fully aware of the conditions that teachers were living under and that the ministry was doing its best to address the situation.
“Most of them share houses and in some cases you find three teachers sharing a house.
It is for this reason that we found it urgent to address this situation as quickly as possible”, she said adding that so far they have been able to buy 581 houses .She said they have also urged headmasters and their PTAs to be on the lookout for houses to lease in their areas as that could also ease the problem .
Acknowledging that there were still far from solving the teachers accommodation crisis Moitoi said her ministry had placed the issue in the priority list and that she was confident that they were moving in the right direction.
A representative of the teachers’ unions, Ibo Kenosi expressed gratitude for the minister’s efforts in addressing the housing need of teachers.
