A 56-year-old businessman from Phase 4 in Gaborone has been charged with reckless driving after he crashed into the Wimpy restaurant along the Western Bypass last weekend.
The accident took place late in the afternoon with shocked customers and staff forced to take evasive action as the wayward vehicle smashed through the restaurant’s glass windows and hurtled into the tills.
According to 24-year-old eyewitness, Gofilwe Ramaeba, the errant driver had just refuelled at the petrol station where the Wimpy restaurant is located but upon leaving, he drove straight into the fast-food restaurant.
“It was horrible. The loud, smashing sound of the glass breaking was terrifying. I suspect the driver was tired because the car moved slowly to crash the restaurant,” said Ramaeba.
Fortunately, even though the crash happened during the restaurant’s peak time, no one was injured although several customers were severely shaken up.
Wimpy restaurant manager, Dimpho Marumo, 37, confirmed that the incident has been reported to the Police but was reluctant to discuss the matter further, saying, “I cannot comment as the matter is still before the police.”
When reached for a comment, Gaborone West Police Station Commander, Superintendent, Agreement Mapeu said investigations into the matter are currently ongoing. “We are still establishing what could have caused the driver to crash into the restaurant,” he said.
