CONVICTED: Morupisi has been convicted of raping a granny

After listening to evidence from an emotional 72- year -old rape victim, Francistown Chief Magistrate, Peggy Madandume last Friday convicted the two culprits.

Godiramang Seema, 38 and Keneilwe Morupisi (30) both of Dimajwe village near Mokubilo village in the central administrative district had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The magistrate however convicted them on overwhelming evidence by the state.

Details of the case are such that on the night of March 26, 2011 at Nyetse cattle post near Mokubilo village, the two rapists sexually assaulted the old woman six times before robbing her of her P60.

Convicting the two, Madandume said the complainant in this matter was a resident of Dimajwe village and therefore knew Seema very well since he also resides in the same locality.

“There is no case of mistaken identity and the DNA tests carried out on the specimen taken from Seema’s pubic hair and inner garment matched those obtained from the complainant’s private parts and pubic area.

The magistrate also told the court that Morupisi had used a condom when both Seema and Morupisi took turns to rape her three times each.

According to the court findings, Morupisi had used a condom in order to conceal evidence that could lead to his conviction but unfortunately for him, he left the used condom at the scene of the crime.

“Police officers who went to the scene found a condom dumped there and laboratory tests which were conducted on it established that the semen inside belonged to Morupisi.

Furthermore, Madandume said both rapists had earlier on gone to the granny’s house where she runs a shebeen to buy alcohol.

Madandume said the state witnesses corroborated each other ‘s evidence very well. “The credibility of all the state witnesses is not in doubt,” she said.

When giving evidence during trial, the abused granny described her attack as a brutal one in which she was beaten, raped six times, robbed and sexually abused for more than three hours while her husband could not help because he was drunk.

She continues to suffer from nightmares, flashbacks, body aches and migraines, and have trouble trusting people especially men.

She is trying her hardest to put it all behind her and move forward with her life, she said.
