Tuskers Ladies team

Francistown based Tuskers Rugby Club has registered a ladies rugby side to play in the ongoing Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) Ladies League.

After a four-year lay off from active rugby due to financial difficulties, Tuskers rugby club are back with a bang. Tuskers are trying their hand at ladies rugby after recruiting players from the Botho University in Francistown.

The relatively newly established university had a ladies rugby side. However, the team was not active in the ladies league due to a number of reasons ranging from lack of finance, poor coordination and shortage of players.

Tuskers decided to coordinate the side and invited some women to join the club that has become an instant darling to many rugby followers in Francistown.

The ladies side has already joined the ongoing BRU Ladies League and registered their first win last Saturday when they played a league encounter against Mochudi Rugby Club’s ladies side at the Francistown Rugby Club.

Female lovers of the oval ball have been thronging the Francistown Rugby Club to watch their heroes.

“This is one of the first few ladies teams that have been formed in the structures of the BRU,” said the Tuskers Rugby Club chairperson, Fritz Botha in an interview with Voice Sport recently.

Tuskers Ladies are under the tutelage of the club’s scrumhalf in the male side, Francois Jacobs and the captainship of its try-scoring ace Casey Copp.

An ecstatic Jacobs said although he still need to work extra hard to ensure that the ladies side is in shape to match seasoned clubs, the past weekend win will motivate and encourage the girls more than ever.

“The team only needs more exposure to be confident,” said Jacobs.
