It will only require five games for a hard working team to be millionaires.
This became a reality on Tuesday as Mascom once more made history by becoming the first ever Botswana Premier League top 8 sponsors. The only other time there was a top eight was before the revamped elite league.
Mascom’s Zen Makhwade Seboni also explained the logo of the top 8 which in its own is an inspiration to players and football fans alike. She explained the importance to have the sponsors colours in it, a shield which resembles players shielding all the attacks from opponents all made on a football and the slogan, ‘Tse di tona’ which means the big ones.
The million will come with events where all expenses will be paid for. Clubs will only have to avail their combats and be ready to fire. According to premier league general manager Phuthego Setete teams’ accommodation and transport will be paid for. This is a new development in Botswana football and it has been given thumbs up by all stakeholders.
The deal, voice sport can reveal that it is a two year one with an option to extend for a further year and or season. ‘This year a total of P3 Million will be splashed in total sponsorship with an additional P600 000 for next season. The winner will walk away with P1 Million in both years with finalists , semi finalists and quarterfinalists all getting a good increment in the second year.
This year the finalist will pocket P350 000 while next year there will be an additional P50 000. All teams that tumble out in the semifinals will walk away with P150 000 and next year it will be bigger and better with a further P50 000. Those getting knocked out in the first stage will get P100 000 and a P25 000 top up in next year’s competition.’ Setete told voice sport
While teams will benefit there will also be individual prizes on offer for the players which will surely be an added advantage. For being the best in ‘tsedi tona’ games the chosen player will be P20 000 richer with that doubling in the next year. Top goal scorer, P10 000, goalkeeper of the tournament, P7.5 as well as the coach of the tournament. All this will double the following year. There will also be a P1 500 for a man of the match in every single game not just televised ones.
Setete also told voice sport that the home and away will be used but the goals scenario currently used in competitions like the champions league will not apply. This means scoring away will not be an added advantage but just a fair and true advantage going into the next round.
The eight teams are Township Rollers, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, ECCO City Greens, Gaborone United, Nico United, BMC, Uniao Flamengo Santos and all of them are already vying for next year’s top eight. During the Mascom sponsored league six seasons ago there were miracles as history was made with three teams, Police X1, ECCO City Greens and Chiefs all winning the league for the first time. It remains to be seen whether the return of Mascom to football will bring back another historic moments.
