Six teachers at Shakawe Senior School have been suspended pending investigations of teacher- students’ sexual relationships.
The group of male teachers was served with suspension letters last week following an investigation which started last year.
Investigations into the matter began after the Ministry of Education and Skills Development received reports of teachers having love affairs with students at an allegedly alarming rate at the said school.
In 2012 when the allegations surfaced, Shakawe and Maun Senior Schools were sharing the same premises in Maun.
However in 2013, Shakawe senior moved to their new premises in Shakawe and fresh investigations into the matter were launched.
So far six teachers have been suspended but reports from the school have indicated that more heads might roll after a team consisting Minister Pelonomi Venson Moitoi,Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and the Regional Director are finished with their investigations today.
Ngamiland Region Educational Director Acronews Maseko said in an interview that those found guilty will be dismissed with immediate effect.
“We are still working on the issue and it will depend on a number of variables but if investigations take long or some teachers get dismissed we will have to find replacement as early as we can.”
Commenting on the suspension, Botswana Secondary Teachers Union Regional Organiser Kabelo Mahupe said that, “Our position as the union is that we will believe and treat those as allegations until they have been proven to be fact. That’s when we would state our position.”
Mahupe however noted that as a union they have pronounced that they totally arbhour teacher- student amorous relationships. “It needs to be noted that we still represent such comrades in hearings so that the facts are presented as they are and the process of natural justice is followed to the letter,” he added.
