Serial rapist jailed for 25 years

A convicted rapist from Motokwe village in Kweneng West was this week locked away in prison to ponder on his crimes against women for 25 years.

Onkgomoditse Kgolo raped a 42-year-old woman at Molehele ward on December 6th, 2015 and two months after that; on February 25th, 2016 he raped another woman aged 39, at Gamoriti ward still in Motokwe.

According to neighbours, the 42-year-old woman had asked for a ride in Kgolo’s donkey cart on a journey from Motokwe to Khakheye when she got raped.

On the way she stopped the cart for a toilet break and that’s when Kgolo followed her from behind into the bush and pushed her to the ground and raped her.

“The victim cried out and it was fortunate that they were already near a certain yard and the man from that yard heard the woman’s cry and rushed to the scene where he grabbed Kgolo’s trousers as he was still undressed. The Good Samaritan only gave back the rapist his trousers once they got a lift to the police station to report the matter,” said the neighbour.

The other victim was assaulted on her way back from a village bar.

The 39-year-old woman said Kgolo followed her and dragged her towards his home where he hit her with a brick on the head and raped her while she was still unconscious.

When delivering the sentence at Molepolole Magistrates’ Court, the presiding Broadhurst Chief Magistrate Lenah Oahile- Mokibe slapped Kgolo with 15- years in prison for raping the 39-year-old victim and 10- years for the 42-year-old victim.

In a similar case Molepolole Chief Magistrate Goabaone Rammapudi has sentenced 30-year-old Tsholofelo Mankeke to 12-years jail for raping a 27-year-old woman on September 14, 2017 at Desert Moon Bar.

“Sentence must speak to seriousness of offense and realise its purpose, it must not be lenient when circumstances do not permit. It is an undeniable and a serious offence that an innocent woman was penetrated without her consent, she was dragged and it was apparent that she was gang raped,” said the magistrate before she disclosed that the victim also suffered injuries on her private parts.

The court considered that Mankeke is currently serving a 10- year sentence from a February 20th, 2018 conviction for a similar offense.

Although he pleaded guilty to the charge and remorsefully told the court that he is now a Christian and he was influenced by his youthful age that did not help him escape the 12-year jail sentence.
