Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has didscredited Dumelang Saleshando of Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) as a ‘city boy’ who is clueless about ordinary lives of a Ngamilander.
Speaking at the launch of the BDP Maun West parliamentary candidate, Reaboka Mbulawa this past Saturday, BDP’s Regional Chairperson, George Lubinda painted a picture of Saleshando as an outsider who is only trying his luck in Maun politics out of desperation.
“Dumelang Saleshando does not know how to milk a cow, he does not understand this constituency, his feet have never been pricked by thorns in our valleys, he is a prodigal son, like the one in the Bible. He gave Gaborone electorates first priority. After losing to a newcomer to politics in Gaborone,he came running to Maun to try his luck,” said Lubinda.
Lubinda further took a swipe at UDC leader, Duma Boko whom he described as a pompus charlatan, puffed up with pride and a sense of self importance. “Why would anyone vote for someone who is full of pride like Boko? He thinks he is smarter than everybody.”
Lubinda went on to talk about how BDP was ahead of competition against UDC to win the October elections. The two political heavyweights, Saleshando and Mbulawa are up against Moalusi Sebati of Alliance for Progressives (AP) in Maun West.
Although it is not yet clear who among the three will emerge victorious, the BDP maintains itis in pole position. In fact Mbulawa’s campaign manager, Abel Molelo has said that by the beginning of August, they will hand over a report to their party president, Mokgweetsi Masisi indicating their favourable standing in the constituency.
“We are doing house to house campaigns and from the 22000 registered voters, fifty-five percent is BDP voters. We will be ready with the report on the first week of August and my believe is that we will be beyond 70 percent (in terms of assured voters).”
