Multi-talented local artist Jethro Umaga Ndebele is set to star on the international stage after being snapped up by Nollywood MDAX Films.
The 34-year-old former special constable jets off for Cameroon at the end of the month, where he is to be the main actor in movie thriller ‘Crime of Crimes’.
The Natale native came to the attention of the Nigerian-based film producers after impressing with his online drama videos.
Sharing the exciting development with Voice Entertainment, Ndebele, who is a final year BA Honours in Live Performance (Stage and TV acting) student at AFDA College, said, “They liked the characters I portrayed in dramas for my practical at the college on Facebook.
“I couldn’t believe it when I found an inbox from MDAX. I had to Google the company to find out if it was not a scam!”
The movie is expected to take two months to shoot and sees Ndebele cast as an Investigating Officer, an ideal role for a man who cut his teeth with the police.
The versatile creative sealed the film deal after negotiating with the producer via Skype. He has already been sent the script and is confident he has the skill-set to excel in his big-screen debut.
Although Ndebele has great belief in his own ability, he admits he owes much to The Ministry of Youth Empowerment Sport and Culture Development for sponsoring his studies.
“My talent has opened doors for me. I went to enquire about arts courses at AFDA but I couldn’t afford the tuition fee. I went to Ministry of Youth seeking scholarship and Minister Thapelo Olopeng approved it. The ministry covers my tuition fee and allowances for me and 13 other artists,” revealed Ndebele, who also presents popular show ‘Ko Mejemong’ on Gabz FM every Friday from 6-9pm.
‘Crime of Crimes’ is set to air in Cameroonian cinemas at the end of September.
Meanwhile, on Friday 12 July, five of Ndebele’s short films will be shown at Newcapital Cinema in Gaborone as part of his Experimental Theatre module for college.
