Selibe Phikwe Mayor, Lekang Mukokomani led by example earlier this week in showing support to the high riding Zebras. The Mayor drove all the way from Phikwe to show the Zebras his support and that of the Phikwe residents ahead of the crucial Togo encounter tomorrow Saturday.
Last month the Zebras managed a historic win against Zimbabwe Warriors for the first time in the history of the two teams. The two nil win was achieved in Selibe Phikwe where the residents showed massive support by coming in large numbers. The BCL Mine also contributed to the Zebras staying in Phikwe. As that was not enough the Selibe Phikwe Zebras supporters club drove all the way to Malawi to watch the Zebras arriving there in the second half of the game just in time for the Zebras goal.
Mukokomani rightly pointed out that this is the most important and critical moment of the country. He said this is indeed kick-off time for the real hard work of the Zebras to be the winning team in Africa. He said the success of this team is in three fold, through the collaboration of the players, technical team and the supporters.
‘’Let me call on our political leaders, business people and spectators to come on board and support all the efforts of the Botswana Football Association in developing football. I implore the political leadership to borrow a leaf from the leadership of South Africa who have massively supported sports, in particular football as evidenced by the successful World Cup that the country recently hosted.’’ Mukokomani said
He also made it clear that this is a real important step as the nation travels together towards qualifying for AFCON for the first time in history. He said players and the technical team must be thanked for putting extra ordinary performances all the time represented the country. As a parent Mukokomani revealed that he was challenged to show his support by giving the team a P10 000 token of appreciation from good Samaritans of the mining town especially Welcome Cash and Carry that donated the money to the Mayor so he could pass it on to the players.
‘’I would also like to encourage all of us to join hands and support the Zebras against Togo. Batswana should do all and rally behind the team and do all in their power to make sure that the Zebras ‘win in Africa with Africa’. Let our hearts, spirits, minds and bodies talk, live and breathe in unison towards the achievement of Vision 2016.’’Mukokomani said.
