A 33-year-old Mosetse man appeared in the Francistown magistrates’ court on Tuesday facing a single count of attempted rape.
Slim and innocent looking Jack Sekelema of the copper mining village of Mosetse in the central administrative district pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted rape.
It is the state’s case that in the small hours of October 26 2013 at Mosetse village, Sekelema allegedly attempted to have sexual intercourse with a 74-year-old granny in his neighborhood.
At the crack of a chilly dawn, Sekelema allegedly tiptoed into the old woman’s homestead and forced entry into her mud hut while she was sleeping.
After gaining entry under cover of darkness, Sekelema allegedly sneaked into the old woman’s blankets and cupped her mouth while opening his trousers in preparation to have sexual intercourse with a lady old enough to be his grandmother.
However, the brave granny managed to ward off her attackers’ advances as the man, who works as a domestic worker herding cattle at a cattlepost in the village’s vicinity, tried to force himself on her.
Having freed her mouth from her attacker’s hand she screamed at the top of her voice and neighbours came running. The members of the public then arrested Sekelema whilst waiting for the police to arrive but he escaped, it is alleged.
The suspect has been on the run ever since October last year and was only rearrested on Monday this week, hence his first court appearance on Tuesday morning.
Assistant Superintended Oteng Selalame, prosecuting the matter, told the court that investigations are complete.
As he is a flight risk, the prosecutor pleaded with the court to release Sekelema on conditional bail in order to ensure that the accused person will stand trial.
Francistown magistrate Dumisani Basupi granted Sekelema bail on condition that he signs own recognizance in the sum of P500. Furthermore, the court ordered Sekelema not to interfere with the complainant and potential state witnesses.
Sekelema has been barred from committing any offense while on bail and ordered to report himself at Mosetse Police Post every Friday between 07.30 and 16.30. The case continues.
