A man who stole P750 from his girlfriend has been convicted for theft and sentenced to a whipping.
Goitsemang Tsebe (32) of Coloured location in Francistown was convicted by Donga Customary Court President Kgosi Harmony Moyo this week.
Facts brought before the court have indicated that on August 18, 2013 at China Town location in Francistown , Tsebe stole a total of P750 from Mathata Batlwaetse’s purse.
Sentencing Tsebe to four lashes of the stroke on his bare buttocks, Kgosi Moyo wondered what kind of an excuse for a man he was to steal from his lover.
“Instead of protecting the girlfriend and her property from thieves, the accused person decided to steal from a person whom he claims to have loved,” wondered Kgosi Moyo.
The court heard that Tsebe met Batlwaetse in a bar at Donga Shopping Complex and proposed love to her love and she responded positively.
As a way of celebrating her new found love the court heard that Batlwaetse bought beer for her man.
After drinking Tsebe took his woman to his house in China Town location for a night of passion.
“That Friday night we met one of the nights to remember,” Balwaetse said in her filing affidavits.
The following morning, she gave Tsebe P20 for transport to go to Block II location where he said he was meant to perform some odd job.
The following night Tsebe woke up around 3am on Sunday morning and stole P750 he had apparently seen in his over’s purse when she opened the purse to give him transport money the previous day .
He then sneaked out of the room while Batlwaetse was in still sleeping.
When she woke up, Tsebe was nowhere to be found. She checked her money and found the purse empty and immediately made a report to the police leading to Tsebe’s arrest.
Constable Keneilwe Madome of the Botswana Police prosecuted the matter.
