A young woman has been charged with the murder of her two-month-old nephew after a fight with the infant’s mother spiraled tragically out of control
Armed with a stone, 20-year-old Tshupo Rantshono’s intended target is thought to have been her aunt.
However, she allegedly hit her newborn relative, Vincent Rantshono, on his left ear by mistake instead.
Tshupo was originally charged with assault over the incident, which took place in Maboane Village on January 21st.
Six days later (Saturday 27 January) Vincent died of his injuries and the offence was upgraded to murder.
“The minor was taken to Maboane Clinic and later on referred to Scottish Livingstone Hospital where he passed on. Investigations are ongoing and post mortem is booked for today,” revealed the Prosecutor, Sub Inspector Portia Lesole during Tuesday’s hearing before Molepolole Magistrates Court.
Sources close to the family claim Tshupo was provoked by her aunt and sister, who had allegedly been teasing her by suggesting her one-year-old child has Down Syndrome.
According to the sources, an argument ensued, which soon turned physical and reportedly resulted in Tshupo being pinned to the floor by her aunt.
Later on in the day, Tshupo allegedly attacked her aunt, inadvertently hitting the baby who was being carried by his mother.
When the charge sheet was read to her, Tshupo immediately pleaded guilty, before court reminded her that her plea was reserved.
Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate Goabaone Ramapudi remanded the suspect in custody until her next mention, scheduled for February 12.
