KEEPING THE FAITH: Bucs keeper Kabelo Kuti will be key to Bucs goal difference

Bush Bucks still with a point to prove after Tonota spoil Maun promotion party

Sankoyo Bush Bucks supporters came in their numbers to party, but left biting their nails after their team failed to clinch automatic promotion in Maun last Saturday.

Unbeaten at home this season victory against Tonota seemed a foregone conclusion to fans and players alike as the festive mood prevailed well before kick off.

Most believed that history had already been written and the title won with Bucs becoming the first team from the North Western district to play in the elite league.

But now the champagne is on hold after the 1-0 defeat to Tonota FC left them still needing a point in their final game to be assured of promotion.

Thabo Ngake found the only goal of the game in the 39th minute when the tricky left back’s powerful shot from just outside the box navigated through a forest of Sankoyo defenders, past gigantic goal minder Kabelo Kuti and into the net, silencing the crowd.

But it could have been worse.

With nearest challengers BR Highlanders and Mahalapye Hotspurs playing to a draw, they still have a three-point gap over Highlanders, and with a superior goal difference of 7 over their rivals, remain favourites for the title.

After a break this weekend Bucs take on Sladden Eagles in Francistown whilst Highlanders meet bottom placed Two Two Five.

In a post match comment Sankoyo head coach Gadimang Tiiso did not accept that the fans expectation and the players’ nerves had played a part in the defeat.

“The truth is that they believed they had already won and failed to take the game as serious.

They started celebrating promotion before they had even kicked off.

We only started taking the game to Tonota after going a goal behind, and then could not break down their defence,” the coach said.

But Gadimang remains calm. He went on to say: “There is no point in pressing the panic button.

The weekend loss was a learning curve and we have to realize that games are only won after 90 minutes.

“We won’t make the same mistake in our final game next weekend,” he vowed.
