Local stars pay tribute to Steez
On Sunday morning, Batswana woke to the sad new that TV personality and rapper Steez had died in a horrific car crash.
It is reported that the man known for his popular punchline, “mochini oi chenjang” was driving from Maun in the direction of Francistown, when his car was involved in a head on collision with another causing the two cars to go up in flames. Steez vehicle exploded whilst he was trapped inside.
Mpho Vincet Tiro (Steez) will be laid to rest at his home Village in Mahalapye this Saturday. Steez shot to fame back in 2003 when he joined the cast of then popular TV show Meribo. The energetic rapper was to later launch a music career.
Speaking to The Voice in an emotionally charged interview, the late rapper’s best friend and the man Steez was last seen with in Maun, Frank Oteng related his final moments with his friend.
“I decided to return earlier than him because I had an emergency business meeting in town. Actually he had suggested that I take the car and drop him off by the Serowe turn off where he would proceed to Francistown but I decided to take the bus instead.”
Asked about the car’s road-worthiness, Oteng explained, “The car had a fault with one of the sensors in the engine, but we were going to fix it.”
He leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter.
On Thursday (27th April) scores of musicians gathered at the Civic Centre in Gaborone for a memorial service to remember their fallen comrade.
Tributes for the late singer have poured in from musicians across all genres, united in their grief for a much-loved and respected man.
