A 10- year-old standard four girl from Kanagoua Cattle post near Makakung village in North West District fatally shot herself in the stomach on Saturday while trying to scare off her siblings.
According to Police District Administration Officer of District N0.5 Superintendent John Kelebeng, the girl shot herself using her father’s 306 riffle.
Kelebeng said the girl was playing outside their home with her siblings when she decided to go into the house where she took her father’s gun and bullets.
“She then loaded the gun and went back outside where she started scaring and threatening her siblings.
When they ran away, she pointed the gun at her stomach and pulled the trigger,” said Kelebeng describing the shocking incident.
When the incident occurred the girl’s parents were not home and were notified of the tragedy by neighbours.
Kelebeng said the girl was rushed to Letsholathebe II Memorial Service where she was certified died.
He said this is the first incident of its kind to occur in the district and urged parents to keep guns safely away from children.
