Allegations that a Gaborone maximum prison inmate was recently drugged and raped by other prisoners have rocked the institute.
A concerned inside source who claimed that prison warders did not act fast enough to attend to the molested inmate’s need for medical attention has revealed to The Voice in an interview that the incident occurred on Saturday night in a cell with 13 people.
“Instead of taking him to the hospital to see a doctor they sent him to Divisional offices where a fight ensued and he ended up breaking the windows of the car that was transporting him. He also wanted his mother to be notified but the officer refused to phone her.”
The source added that after much consideration and protest from the violated man,he was eventually sent to Princess Marina hospital and a case of rape was opened at Central Police Station.
Central police station commander superintendent Kevin Mookodi confirmed having received a case from Prison which involved a 28- year- old robbery convict.
“We are investigating a case of rape in which an inmate is said to have been abused whilst unconscious,” said Mookodi who declined to comment further to avoid jeopardising ongoing investigations.
“An internal investigation was conducted into the allegation to determine its truthfulness or otherwise, and also to assist in taking appropriate action.
The victim was sent for medical examination at Princess Marina Hospital but nothing was found to support the rape allegation.”said Wamorena who also mentioned that the complainant was sharing a cell with 12 other prisoners on the night but has since been transferred from Maximum to First Offenders Prison to allow investigations to proceed smoothly and for his own safety.
Wamorena however said that if the allegations turn out to be true, appropriate legal action will be taken.
