The Gaborone City Marathon whose first edition was hosted in April 18 have honoured their pledge of giving back to the community.
The founding member of the marathon and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Thola Magang told a media briefing that they have given all the money from the registration to the needy.
The event registered at least 2 500 runners with 2 300 turning up for the marathon and fun races. The marathon had both the amateur and professional runners and was used as a qualifier for some of the world events like the World Championships and the Commonwealth games.
“We will be sticking to the April month to avoid clash of similar events. We have marathons like the oldest of them all hosted in July dubbed the Bosele Marathon. Obviously one of the corner stones of the Gaborone City Marathon was to raise money for various charities and this year five of them benefited. Those are, Seeing is Believing,Y Care, Botswana Heart Foundation, Sponsor a Child and Lady Khama Charity,” Magang said
All the five went home with P24 000 each after the Kabelano trust joined the party and donated P50 000 on top of the P70 000 that the city marathon donated. Magang explained that they are probably the only marathon that take all the registration fee and donate it. In most marathons it is used to help on administration issues. He also revealed that the marathon would still be held in April next year with a different theme, ‘Run the World’. This years theme was ‘Be part of the first.’
