FUNNY MAN: Johnny Kobedi

The local music fraternity has been hit by yet another loss of a compatriot. Self proclaimed King of local music died aged 47 at Mochudi’s Deborah Relief Memorial Hospital.

Just months after another talented artist, Donald Botshelo was laid to rest in Phitshane, the country mourns Kobedi who has been unwell for some time. He was admitted at the hospital last week Tuesday and succumbed to an undisclosed illness on Friday.

The “Naledi ya Botswana” hit maker was well known for his hilarious approach to music. DJ Scientist as he preferred to be called was one of the most innovative artists of his generation. He was perhaps the only artist who recorded self produced albums; continuously declaring that he did not want to be cheated by music promoters.

Some of his famous antic was to dress up as a lady, complete with make-up and pantyhose something that caused some people to dismiss him as a clown.

Though Kobedi was among the first artist to record, his career never really took off and he will be forever be conspicuously absent from his favourite spot at the bus rank. There are no wooden spoons and catapults hanging from the makeshift shelter, which Kobedi occupied every day.

Perhaps his most significant and outrageous move was when he quit his long term political party Botswana National Front in 2004 to join rivals Botswana Democratic Party.

He famously said he decided to join the BDP because he was tired of the childish games at BNF which he said hindered the party from progressing.

Kobedi is survived by his wife and six children.
