Botswana: 44 years of Independence

As Botswana will be celebrating her 44 years of independence next week, Francistown residents have found it fit to take park in the day by showcasing their culture.
Speaking at a press conference this week, Assistant District Commissioner Gobe Macha said people should not take independence celebrations lightly and as an ordinary holiday.
“We encourage people to show their pride in this day by wearing traditional attires and eating traditional food. We have addressed Kgotla meetings in all Francistown wards selling this idea to the community and their leaders. They are supporting it and they promised to spread it in their respective areas,” said Macha.
He said initially they had financial problems which, was going to make it impossible to celebrate the day but they embarked on fund raising activities while donations from local business have been pouring in.
This Saturday they will host Miss Independence Francistown and Thapama Hotel has offered their premises for free. He said the beauty pageant will be different as contestants will strictly dress on their traditional attires.
