For the love of live football
FOOTBALL FRENZY: EPL Sports Promotions clients attending a game

Local company takes clients to EPL matches

It all started after attending an English Premier League (EPL) game between Manchester United and Newcastle in 2004.

Although the match finished 0-0, the electric atmosphere inside a packed Old Trafford – the official attendance was recorded as 67, 622 – blew Geoffrey Mothoogae away.

The bug had bitten and Mothoogae, desperate to fill his footballing fix, has been a frequent traveller to England ever since.

“I attended my first EPL game in 2004 when I was visiting my brother who was studying at University of Manchester. Since then, and after the awing stadium experience I had, I have never looked back. I got into the habit of saving up for a live game every other year,” explained the 44-year-old in an interview with Voice Money this week.

It was almost 11 years after that fateful January day at the Theatre of Dreams, when the businessman in Mothoogae realised there was potential for profit in his passion.

BUSINESSMAN: Geoffrey Mothooagae

Attempting to cash in on the lure of the EPL whilst simultaneously making dreams come true for local football fans, he founded EPL Sports Promotions in 2015.

The company organises packages to attend live matches in Europe’s elite leagues, with particular focus on England’s top flight as well as the Spanish La Liga.

Mothoogae says they aim to attend eight EPL fixtures a season, proudly revealing the venture has grown in popularity to the extent that they now average around ten clients a trip compared to two when they first started.

“You will appreciate that this is a medium to high-end product and takes a bit of planning from customers with product awareness playing a critical role on growth,” said the football fanatic, adding the company covers other sporting events as well, with Formula One another favourite.

However, the Premier League, which has an ardent following in Botswana, remains EPL Sports Promotions most popular package.

“It is the most watched league globally but the majority of Batswana did not know where to start in order to watch these games live.

“So, this is where EPL Sports Promotions comes to take off that hassle and make it easier for them. Even for those who did, the admission is that the group excursion offers a much bigger experience,” noted Mothoogae, who explains that his company’s objective is to promote and develop a culture of attending games live and in the process convert a number of fans from just being armchair fans.

“We do this by making it easier for the supporter to attend these games cost-effectively, with more flexibility by way of logistical arrangements, specifically travels,” he said, adding they offer ‘ground packages’.

“This is to mean we take care of our clients when they land at destination city, with inclusions like transportation, accommodation (with an option between 3 and 4 stars), match day VIP tickets, stadium and museum tours amongst others.”

The next game EPL Sports Promotions intend to cover is on Saturday 23 February when Manchester United host Liverpool. The rivalry between the two clubs is considered one of the fiercest in English football, with the latest meeting taking on even more significance as Liverpool are currently top of the table and looking to win the Premier League for the first time in their illustrious history.
