Local traditional artist Shumba Ratshega (born Moses Malapela) has quashed allegation that his hit song ‘Leso la monnamogolo’ could be somebody’s property.

The popular song which won the Best Traditional song award last year remains one of the controversial traditional songs ever released.

Rumours of the authenticity of the song surfaced during the Botswana Musicians Union annual awards where a couple of artists from Mafikeng approached BOMU Committee members to launch a complaint.

“Yes we met them, but they never came back to support their claim.

What we wanted was for them to show us evidence that indeed Ratshega stole their song, but since they did not come back I guess the issue is water under the bridge,” said BOMU Secretary General Pagson Ntsie.

Meanwhile Ratshega said he is still shocked that a certain Mpho Baoki popularly known as ‘Dipotata’ is continuing with “this malicious claim.”

Baoki who is based in Mafikeng had posted on his facebook wall that amongst all of his friends, Ratshega disappointed him by stealing his song idea.

“Mo Ditsaleng tsame tsotlhe sum1 who dissapointed me badly (SHUMBA RATSHEGA)Moses Malapela he stole mi idea mi song Ga Monna yo Mongwe a Swa go tsoga yo mongwe..ene a bare Loso la Monnamogolo le mophidisitse ga setlhare se sengwe seswa go mela se sengwe ebile ke Song of the year Ko Botswana.

Meanwhile Ratshega said although the concept is similar his song is totally different from Dipotata’s song.

“We are artists and sometimes we think alike.

A song like Makhirikhiri is similar to Kulenyane but I cannot say Culture Spears stole my song, we just had the same concept,” said Ratshega.

The award winning artist also lamented that there seem to be an unofficial ban of his song by local radio stations.

“My song is receiving more airplay in South Africa than here.

Motsweding plays the song without any complaints and listeners love it,” he said.
