Debswana Managing Director, Balisi Bonyongo, says over the past three years the company has invested over P11.2 million in sports development.
Bonyongo said this during the Mascom Top8 awards last Thursday.
He said Debswana has been associated with football development for a long time having sponsored the First Divison League for the past four years.
He said they also sponsored Botswana Under-23 team and the senior national team, the Zebras.
Bonyongo said in other sports events they sponsored Africa Youth Games, Special Olympic team, chess, karate, table tennis and boxing among others.
“This year we extended ‘Re Ba Bona Ha’ grass root development programme sponsorship with P3 million. We have also sponsored Netball World Youth Cup games with P1.2 million.
Debswana encourages and supports its employees in different sporting codes by availing sporting grounds, transport and financial assistance.
This is in line with our corporate social responsibility,” said Bonyongo
The MD said Debswana is glad to be associated with football as it has similarities with diamonds.
He said diamonds represent nothing more than an opportunity that may either be seized or wasted and that similarly in football, one can have the best physique and talent but if they don’t put them to use, they will not reap any rewards.
Bonyongo said since the Top8 inception in 2012, Mascom has invested over P25 million in the tournament.
He said this should challenge many more in the private sector to follow suit.
He advised this season’s champions, Jwaneng Galaxy, to develop a plan of how they are going to spend their P1.2 million prize money.
