The love for a traditional brew popularly known as khadi has landed a Sowa township teenager in murky waters and his older drinking pal in Nyangabgwe hospital’s intensive care unit.
The 16-year-old boy from Malelejwe cattle post in the outskirts of Sowatown who can not be named for legal age reasons allegedly injured his drinking colleague, Mompati Bagatiseng (37) at the two’s favourite watering hole.
Allegations stated in court are that on May 2, 2014, the suspect hit his older friend Bagatiseng with a knobkerrie on the head following a heated argument over why Bagatiseng had a sip of the suspect’s drink without his permission.
The two were long time drinking mates, the court heard.
Now Bagatiseng is fighting for his dear life at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital where he has been admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) since the day of the incident.
The prosecutor, Masego Kula did not object to the accused person being granted bail.
“Since he is a minor, we cannot advocate for the accused person to be incarcerated as the police monitor the situation of the victim,” The prosecutor argued and Francistown Chief Magistrate, Gaedupe Makgatho granted him bail and ordered him to immediately relocate to Dukwi to be kept under the care of some reliable relatives who would make sure he reports to court when needed.
He is expected back in court on June 9 for a routine mention. He is not legally represented.
