Employer says in a clash with job seekers
A business owner accused of dubious recruitment tactics designed to manipulate unsuspecting employees into lowly paid menial jobs has denied that she was out to exploit anyone.
Leopard Lodge owner, Maria David whose dodgy recruitment methods were exposed and criticised by several disgruntled job seekers recently said that she was left with no choice but to employ illegal immigrants because Batswana were not only lazy but proving to be expensive too.
“I m not afraid to go to Ian Khama and explain to him that I have employed illegal Zimbabweans because Batswana are not only lazy but they are now refusing my offers and I cannot let my job suffer,” she said.
David had attracted a number of job seekers who thronged her lodge situated at Fekeng Lands along the Boatle –Mankgodi road in response to an advertisement for several jobs available.
Trouble however started when a number of those who were called for interviews started grumbling and accusing her of being a con artist who was out to trick them into accepting jobs they did not apply for.
In response David charged that instead of complaining, job seekers should have been grateful to her for creating better paying jobs than government’s poverty relief scheme( Ipelegeng) 19- year old Nonofo Ramooki from Manyana said: “I applied for a waitressing post but David told me that I was too young to work as a waitress and offered me to work as gardener while gaining experience instead.”
Failing to understand how she could gain waitressing experience while working as a gardner Ramooki turned down the offer.
Another job hunter interviewed, Onkabetse Matsowa said he was meant to be interviewed for the post of a driver but after travelling all the way from Mhalapitsa he was told that the vacancy had been filled and offered to do landscaping instead.
He too refused to take the offer while his friend Obakeng Mmolai who had applied for the landscaping and gardening position was offered a two weeks trial period for P450 which he also declined.
