With a number of drowning incidents heightening in the Ngamiland District, police have cautioned the public against using rivers as spots for entertainment swimming.

When giving a police report about a 32-year-old man of Saoshoko Ward in Shakawe who drowned on Saturday evening, Superintended John Kelebeng said drowning incidents were a cause for concern.

He said the man had been swimming in the river with his four friends on Saturday when suddenly he disappeared in the river and never came back until his body was recovered by Botswana Defence Force and police scuba divers the following morning.

Supt Kelebeng further advised people to refrain from swimming in the rivers as they harbor dangerous creatures.

Moreover he said the drowning cases depicted similar sequences where people drowned with implications of entertaining themselves with alcohol. “Yes we all know it’s hot but the weather should not be used as an excuse for swimming in rivers,” he said.
