Member of Parliament (MP) for South East South, Odirile Motlhale who defected from the ruling party to join it’s splinter group, Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD), says he is worried about the current talks of civil war by the ruling party leadership at the wake of the BMD formation.
“The civil war talk is scary and naturally it should disturb Batswana. When the BNF split there was never talk of war, why then should it surface when the ruling party disintegrates?” Motlhale exclaimed when responding to a journalist question during a press conference in Ramotswa on Wednesday.
The press conference was called to announce Motlhale’s defection to BMD. His move has brought to eight the number of BMD MPs, making it the main opposition in Parliament.
Motlhale further said he was tired of the current BDP leadership and governance, that he did not have enough time to consult his electorates before quitting the party. After 18 years of BDP service and having experienced factional wars within the ruling party Motlhale revealed that what forced him out was the conviction to loyally serve the interest of his constituency.
“We are in Parliament to represent the interest of the people but we were forced to reject motions which were aimed at protecting such interests. I could not take it anymore,” he said.

Although only one councilor from Ramotswa central moved with him to BMD he promised that more are to follow.
Councillor, Lotion Gaseitsewe of Ramotswa Central joined the BMD together with councilor Pikina Seitshiro of Tlokweng Central in South East North.
When welcoming new members to their organization, the deputy chairperson of BMD, Botsalo Ntuane explained that Motlhale moved out of the BDP not along factional lines.
“He was not a factionalist and he never attended evening meetings. You have been told that we moved out because we were indiscipline, but the last four MPs to join us never offended the leadership in anyway. They left out of principle and conviction,” Ntuane said.
