REST IN PEACE: Otsile Ramokgethi Maleka

Young Gaborone man blows his head off with his father’s rifle
The Maleka family in Gaborone West is reeling in shock and asking themselves questions they will never get answers to following the passing on of their 24-year old son who blew his head off using his father rifle last Wednesday.
“I wish I knew why my son decided to take his life, he didn’t leave a note and didn’t show any signs of depression prior to what he did. We will never know why, it’s a question that we will live with for the rest of our lives,’’ said a visibly shaken 55-year old Lesego Maleka.
Speaking at his home where the family is gathered prior to the burial of his son Otsile this Saturday, Maleka revealed how his wife came home from work and looked for their son who they left had home as usual.
“She got into the house and called him with no answer, she then went outside to ask his friends and neighbors if they knew about his where-about but all professed ignorance. She then decided to check in his room and that is where she found him, lying on his bed with his head blown off,’’ said Maleka fighting back his tears.

He said it was then that they called him to come home as soon as possible as he was on his way from Mochudi.
“When they called saying I should come home quickly, it never occurred to me this is what I was coming home to. I wish I could bring him back, he was a good son who never gave us any problems,” he said, adding that Otsile was looking forward to pursuing his accounting studies.
Maleka revealed that despite the loud noise made by his rifle when the trigger is pulled, the neighbours heard no sound when Otsile pulled the trigger to end his life.
“He placed it under his chin and shot himself. The bullet went through his head, through the headboard and got stuck on the wall,’’ he revealed.
He said when the police arrived they searched his pockets and his room hoping to find a note as to why he did what he did to no avail.
Maleka said what was surprised them was that since he acquired the gun for hunting in 1990 his son never showed interest in it or how to use it.
“For years it was there in our bedroom and he never bothered to learn how to use it, little did we know that he would one day use the same gun that he was not interested in to end his life and why he did that we will never know,’’ he said.
