CHAINED: Mbuye and Pholi

Three gunmen who were nabbed during a flopped armed robbery attempt appeared in court last week, charged with malicious damage to property, possession of arms and live rounds of ammunition.
Baleseng Molathiwa (32), Dumisane Mbuye (35) and 28-year-old Keamogetse Pholi, were caught red handed after they allegedly broke a window to a house belonging to a Chinese businessman in Tutume village, during the President Holidays.
Armed with two riffles and six live rounds of ammunition, the trio, in the company of other two suspects who were not before court, allegedly broke the window for Gao Hao’s dwelling house before they were unceremoniously intercepted by police working on a tip off.
Nothing was stolen during the flopped robbery attempt but one suspect was seriously injured when there was an exchange of fire between the suspects and members of the police who happened to be all armed.
The prosecution asked the court to remand the three gunmen in custody while police continue with their investigation into the matter.
Sergeant Paphani Kuda told court that the suspects were also wanted by the police in Gaborone, for crimes committed within the city and Tlokweng, sometime early this year.
The trio however flatly dismissed allegations that they were on the run, and that police in Gaborone were hunting for them. They all pleaded with the magistrate to grant them bail, indicating that there was no way they could temper with police investigations into the pending matter against them.
“I am asking for bail, so that I can see a doctor. I was seriously assaulted during the time of arrest,” asked Mbuye to no avail.
Chief Magistrate Kenneth Obeng ordered that the suspects be thrown behind bars until police were done with their preliminary investigations. He said the three should be brought again for mention on the 6th next month.
