Mawee’s grand entrance on SA comedy market
This past weekend marked an interesting time in the future of the local comedy industry as more local comedians are getting a break to display their talents on South African stages.
Having taken Mod and Ribcracker to perform at the Mafikeng Comedy Jam alongside top SA comics, as well as Paps who dazzled Morula Sun in Pretoria, it was time to introduce Gabane born Oefile ‘Mawee’ Mokgware to the competitive SA market.
The event termed ‘Rock the Mother Tongue’ was held at the Kempton Park Civic Centre and was well attended as tickets were sold-out days before the show.
The event featured among others American Griff, who is the first USA comic to perform on Comedy Central Africa, top SA comics Trevor Gumbi, Nina Hastie, Pastor, Thabang ER, Thapelo King Flat with Mashabela Galane as the host.
Mawee proved he is force to reckon with belting out his witty and humorous punch lines that left the audience in stitches.
“Mawee has a great future in comedy if he can keep or even surpass this standard of performance. I was impressed when I saw him do wonders while I was in Botswana, hence I invited him to showcase his special talent on our shores”, said Galane.
“Although I couldn’t understand what he was saying, you could clearly see that the young man was rocking judging by the response from the crowd. The boy is talented and is surely going places”, commented the USA comic Griff, who also presented the top award at the 2014 Comics Choice Awards at Monte Casino.
Mawee is definitely one of the most fearlessly funny comics working today, raging on the absurd, ridiculous and unbelievable.
On Saturday, Mawee attended the Comics Choice awards with fellow comics Brooks, Ribcracker and Mod where they got to rub shoulders with who-is-who of South African comedy, and also get media interviews.
They also got to benchmark on the different styles of comedy and also chat with other comedians and get advices.
Well established comedians like Kagiso Lediga, David Kau, Conrad Koch of Chester Missing fame, Ndumiso Lindi, Tumi Morake, Thapelo Tips Seemise, Mashabela were happy to share advices on how the comedians can improve themselves and also the scene in Botswana.

Mawee will be headlining the Winner’s Circle alongside SA heavyweight Sifiso Nene this Friday 8th August at Cresta President.
He has since been invited to two shows this coming Saturday 9th August, one in Pretoria and the other one in Johannesburg.
Gaolathe Kediemetse of Major Moves Comedy said: “The more exposure he has on these international trips is the more he can be able to make a good living for himself from his talent, and we are really happy for him. We need to have more and more of our comics performing internationally, and we will help the comedians to do exactly that”.
