Matebejana Football Development club held a successful pre-season tournament recently at the SSKB stadium.
The tournament attracted premier league teams such as Mochudi Center Chiefs, Extension Gunners, newly promoted Letlapeng and Jomo Cosmos from South Africa.
The one day tournament produced some players who were a marvel to watch in the likes of Obonye Marope of Matebejana, whom Extension Gunners have shown interest in signing.
Matebejana manager Tebogo Kamati said the tournament gave players a platform to catch the eye of premier league teams.
“We target students and out of school youth staying in around Gaborone, our aim is to unearth talent and develop players’ skills so that they can play professional football.
Our development is not only based on players, we also train coaches and referees”, stated Kamati
“We now have a team that is in Kweneng region division one.
This tournament helps us to prepare for the next season, and our coach uses it to find new combinations and test players’ strength against premier league sides.”
Kamati added that Cosmos were invited by Gunners to play friendly game and they decided to play their friendly during the Matebejane tournament.
They have since agreed with Cosmos to feature in the tournament annually, and this has been a welcome development, which will give players an exposure and probably end up playing in the neighbouring country.
Despite complaining about the bumpy pitch which made it difficult for them to play, Bamuza Sono said, “Gunners gave us a good practice and training for next season.
Most of our players are under 23 and I am impressed with their performance”.
Over the years Matebejana has enjoyed developing players from the age of 8 and BDF X1 plus other premier league teams sign them when they reach premier stage.
The likes of Jerome Ramathakwane, Jackie Mothatego and Pako Modikwa are some of the products of Matebejana
