After spending a week in jail to await sentencing, a young woman who stabbed her ex with a knife breathed a sigh of relief when she got away with a P200 fine and a suspended prison sentence.
Francistown Magistrate Dumisani Basupi’s courtroom turned into a house of wailing, when Mphoentle Takwe was sent to jail briefly after pleading guilty to a charge of unlawful wounding.
The 22- year- old swanky young woman had confessed to knifing the father of her nine months old baby when she caught him in bed with another woman.
According to papers read in court,Takwe started a fight with Derrick Kegakgameste (26) and his new lover when she busted them in his bedroom.
Afraid the fight would turn into a nasty bloodbath, Derrick’s landlord ordered the threesome to resolve their misunderstanding elsewhere.
On their way to Takwe’s place in Ntshe, the jealous lover drew a knife and stabbed Derrick in the neck.
“It was not my intention to cause injuries.
I reacted out of anger and by reaching out for a knife I caused injuries to him”, the young woman had confessed before hitching a ride to prison in the police Land Cruiser.
In mitigation she had pleaded with Magistrate Basupi to be lenient on her because she was an orphan with a little baby to take care of.
“I ask for forgiveness for skipping the previous mention.
I have lost my job and I have since been admitted in school.
I didn’t mean to hurt Derrick.
I over reacted, I was nine months pregnant then,” she pleaded.
After spending a week behind bars Magistrate Basupi fined TakweP200 and sentenced her to three years in jail wholly suspended on condition that she does not commit the same offence in the next two years.
