For those who missed out on the famous 1000km desert race last week end, the Lobelo Racing club Francistown (LRCF)will be hosting the first ever national motor cross race next weekend.

The race which will draw riders from as far as Gaborone and Maun is expected to attract over 40 riders, ranging from as young as four years old to the most experienced in the MXI class.

The track event will be held at the Dumela racing track.

The track has been upgraded to an international standard with exciting obstacles which will definitely bring the best out of the many riders.

“This track is unique in that it runs anticlockwise, which is very rare in motorsport,” commented Lola Berrie, LRCF Club Secretary
“Points scored in this race event will count not only towards the National Championship of Botswana, but will aid in the selection of the Botswana Team to travel to Mindola, Kitwe, Zambia for the Southern African Regions event to be held in August”, said Berrie.

Berrie further said the race would be an exciting day in Botswana motor sport history.
“These riders will be the very first to score points in the Botswana National Motocross Championship, leading them towards being chosen to represent Botswana,” she added.

“Some of our Botswana riders have been riding for their whole lives and have never had the opportunity to ride for Botswana, now they can!” concluded Berrie.

For many years Botswana has always raced under the flag of Motor Sport South Africa. Last year November, Botswana Motor Sports was officially affiliated to the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme), from which it was then affiliated to FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile), and can now run its own national championship.

Only the top five winners will qualify to make the Botswana team which will travel to Zambia in August.
