Swaneng Hill Senior School boys team A are this year’s Mater Spei College Chess Festival Champions.
The tournament which attracted 1 392 participants from primary, junior and senior schools was sponsored by Mater Spei College to a tune of P40 000.
Speaking to Voice Sport Swaneng team A captain Bompheletse Kebobonye said it was easy to win their games because they started playing chess at a young age. He said team work and determination is what helped them win their games.
“We started playing together when doing standard four, so we understand each other well. This is our last year, we are doing form five and we are now working on grooming Team B so that they can continue the legacy,” said Kebobonye.
“Our aim is all of us to play for the senior national team,” said Kebobonye.
Botswana Chess Federation Vice President-Administration Rodger Tiroyamodimo said players did exceptionally well. He said the festival is also growing every year and they hope going forward it will attract more sponsors. He said the tournament was used to select players that will represent the country at World Youth Chess Championship to be held in Durban this September.
“Our mandate is to develop chess and hopefully we will host tournaments of this magnitude in the future. This can only be achieved if the business community can come on board to sponsor our games,” said Tiroyamodimo.
