It’s All Write

Farafina Trust will be holding a creative writing workshop in Lagos, organized by award-winning writer and creative director of Farafina Trust, Chimamanda Adichie, from August 5 to August 15, 2014.

The workshop is sponsored by Nigerian Breweries Plc. Guest writers who will co-teach the workshop alongside Adichie are the Caine Prize Winning Kenyan writer Binyavanga Wainaina, Aslak Sira Myhre and others.

The workshop will take the form of a class. Participants will be assigned a wide range of reading exercises, as well as daily writing exercises.

The aim of the workshop is to improve the craft of writers and to encourage published and unpublished writers by bringing different perspectives to the art of storytelling. Participation is limited only to those who apply and are accepted.

Your e-mail subject should read ‘Workshop Application.’

The body of the e-mail should contain the following:

1. Your Name

2. Your address

3. A few sentences about yourself

4. A writing sample of between 200 and 800 words. The sample must be either fiction or non-fiction.

All material must be pasted or written in the body of the e-mail. Please do not include any attachments in your e-mail.

Applications with attachments will be automatically disqualified. Deadline for submissions is June 30 2014.

Only those accepted to the workshop will be notified by July 22 2014.

Accommodation in Lagos will be provided for all accepted applicants who are able to attend for the ten-day duration of the workshop you must pay for your flight to Nigeria.

A literary evening of readings, open to the public, will be held at the end of the workshop.

A POETRY MARKET

The Prairie Schooner Literary Journal is excited to announce that their Winter 2014 issue will feature a poetry portfolio cantered on the theme of Women and the Global Imagination, guest-edited by Alicia Ostriker.

If you have work that you would like considered for this issue, send up to five pages of unpublished poems and/or prose poetry, along with your contact information and a 3-line bio, to schooner.special.subs@gmail.com.

What would fit? Anything with an international dimension or that engages in some way with the world we live in. The submission period ends May 15th.

Artist Residencies (Various disciplines)

The Africa Centre has formed partnerships with artist in residency programmes in Australia, Brazil, India, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and the United States to provide eight residencies for our Artists in Residency (AIR) 2014 Programme.

AIR is seeking applications from African artists who are both socially engaged and stretching the boundaries of their creative domain.

The AIR partners select an artist from a short list provided by the Africa Centre, for one of their 2014 or 2015 residencies.

The costs of the residency and round-trip airfare are included in each residency award made.

The residencies are available to all types of artists, but each residency has different durations, structures and requirements.

Deadline for application submissions is the 20th June 2014.

APPLICATION GUIDE:

AIR accepts submissions from emerging, mid-career, and senior level artists across artistic discipline i.e. visual arts, performing arts, curatorial practice, performing arts, music, creative writing and literature who are either self taught or formally trained in their respective discipline.

Applicants must:

  • Be over 21 years of age;
  • Have a valid passport;
  • Be from the African continent and must minimally reside in Africa for six months of the year; and
  • Speak English.
