Sehitwa Police are investigating a case in which a 34-year-old man of Somelo settlement in the North West District sneaked into his girlfriend’s bedroom and strangled her to death with a scarf on Thursday night.
Basimane Basimane was granted bail earlier this year by Maun Magistrate Court for another murder he committed in December last year.
He had apparently beaten a man on the head with a metal rod and killed him for suspicions that he was in love with his girlfriend.
Sehitwa Police Station Commander Superintendent Zakes Maseke said Basimane was seen hiking from Toteng, on the said night, en route to Bothatogo village where the 31-year-old girlfriend stayed.
Maseke said that it looks like he had planned the whole thing in advance as he managed to sneak into the woman’s room through a window without anyone noticing.
“He went through a window and strangled her to death with a scarf before hanging himself with a wire.”
He said that both the deceased and his victim were found in the morning by their children who alerted the nearby elders.
Maseke also confirmed that Basimane was indeed on bail having murdered a man at Somelo, his home village, last year.
“We don’t know why he did all that and our investigations on the matter are ongoing, it is a very sad thing.”
Maseke said that the murder–suicide was the first of its kind in this area since the beginning of the year.
