Police have confirmed the death of Malefho Jomo Mabukwe, a prisoner who was shot dead last week near Salajwe village after escaping from the first offenders prison in Gaborone.
After escaping from prison, the 32-year old man from Mochudi who had been on the run since February 5th stole a car in Gaborone and disappeared.
On February 13th whilst on the run, Mabukwe allegedly gave a ride to a young woman whom he raped several times before dumping in the bush.
Superintendent Nkwebi Chilisa of Mogoditshane police confirmed the incident.
“We received a report from a lady on the 13th telling us that she had been raped at Sasako lands.
She told us that the rapist had given her a lift and that at some point he drove along the Molepolole road and turned off at Kopong junction where he then raped her.
He is said to have driven on and told the lady that he was going to fetch something in the area only to rape her again at Sasako lands. He then stole her phone and P160 cash and drove off,” he said.
With the help of some Sasako residents, the victim is said to have contacted Mogoditshane police who picked up Mabukwe’s trail.
“We were given the description of the vehicle and we traced him,” Chilisa added.
Mabukwe, who it is believed was headed for Kaudwane to see a famous traditional doctor about his troubles, allegedly had a car breakdown near Salajwe and he started walking.
When the police caught up with him, Mabukwe is reported to have wielded a knife and attempted to attack one of the police officers.
When he ignored warning shots the police allegedly shot him in his midriff during the scuffle.
Mabukwe had been serving a 12-year sentence from 2008 for rape, theft of a motor vehicle, obtaining by false pretences, escaping from lawful custody and house breaking offences.
Superintendent Chilisa said they were investigating the incident further.
