The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced the dates for the coming supplementary registration.
The dates are February 21st to 2nd March.
In the previous registration exercise only 478 148 eligible voters were registered.
IEC is targeting at least 1.2 million eligible voters to have registered by the end of the exercise.
IEC’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Osupile Maroba. Said, “Supplementary registration is subject to many factors, but the fundamental one is that we registered only 20% of the total number we had hoped to reach so there was a need for a supplement.”
Maroba said there are various reasons why some people refuse to participate in elections some of which he blames on the local political climate.
Maroba said people who do not vote effectively relinquish their power to those who do.
“If you are happy with the status quo you have to vote to maintain it and if you are not, it is also through voting that you can change the situation,” he advised.
