An innocent bystander was shot dead in Matsiloje last weekend when armed robbers raided the bar where he was drinking.
Masunga Senior Secondary School teacher John Keletse entered the ‘Other Place’ bar just as four armed gunmen were in the process of robbing the place.
The men ordered everyone to lie down and fired warning shots into the air before taking money from the till and robbing customers of their cash and cell phones.
Speaking to The Voice an eyewitness KaoneGaseitsewe said he was sitting at the bar when a man came in and pointed a gun at his forehead before pushing him to the ground.
“ ‘Panzipanzi (down)’ ordered the robber.
At first I thought it was some sort of drunken prank, then the victim walked into the bar to buy a drink. When he took out his money the robber grabbed it.
The guy asked the men not to harass him, but without warning he was shot in the chest.
He fell to the ground with his hand over the wound as if trying to keep the blood inside. He kept repeating, ‘Guys why are you trying to kill me?’ They didn’t answer, instead the man shot him again from close range.”
Obviously traumatised by the incident Gaseitsewe went on to say: “Since then Ihaven’t been able to sleep. When I close my eyes all I see is a replay of the action. I will never forget what happened.”
The owner of the bar AdreasNcube said the suspects arrived at the complex on Friday midday. He said they were with some village girls so he did not suspect anything.
“The incident happened just a few minutes after I left the complex, but I only found out what had happened when one of my staff rushed to my place to tell me.”
Ncube revealed that the robbers got away with around P10 000.
Acting MatsilojeStation Commander Assistant Superintendent Alec Marula was also one of the victims. They took his mobile phone and P2300.
Commenting officially on the incident he said that investigations were ongoing and they were working with Zimbabwe Police as they suspect the robbers were from the neighbouring country.
