The man behind the brutal shooting of a Zimbabwean illegal migrant was on Tuesday denied bail by a Palapye magistrate.
37-year-old Keitumetse Khunowu who has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting Gift Ncube on the arms had asked the court to grant him freedom to go and care for his sick mother.
Chief Magistrate Rebecca Motsamai however advised the suspect to try his luck with the High Court as the law was not clear on whether Magistrate courts have a jurisdiction to grant people charged with murder bail.
The investigating officer Inspector Ditsapelo Emmanuel said what he knew was that Ncube’s arms had to be amputated following the alleged shooting and that he was currently hospitalized in Mahalapye.
He argued that it would not be in the interest of justice for Khunowu to be released before Ncube’s condition was verified.
Asked for a comment the Zimbabwean embassy said that the matter had been taken up at government level and it would therefore not be appropriate for them to discuss it with the media.
“We acknowledge receipt of your correspondence and regret to advise that since the matter has now been referred by the embassy to the Government of the Republic of Botswana, we are no longer in a position to discuss it with the media,” said the curt response from the Zimbabwean embassy.
Ncube who is currently in hospital said he was shocked to learn that there was someone going around asking for donations using his name without his consent.
“The person behind this wicked mission, of using my current situation for financial gain is very cruel. I wish the cops would nab him and bring him to book,”Ncube said.
The maimed young man also revealed that he might be released from hospital before the end of this week.He said he was likely to stay with some Good Samaritan in Gaborone until his case was over.
