She never saw it coming. But now a devastated Ramonaka mother of six has to deal with the shock of finding out that the man she has loved for the past three years might have molested her teenaged daughters and infected them with HIV too.
52- year old Mosele Matshaba Mooki’s suspected child abuse was uncovered recently when his oldest step-daughter 18, made the chilling allegations on her visit to the local clinic to collect her Anti Retroviral drugs.
She told the nurse how her ‘father’ had been sexually molesting her and her 13-year-old sister.
Mooki has been subsequently charged with a single count of rape and is currently awaiting to appear in the Mochudi Magistrate court soon.
In an interview, the devastated mother, Keitutile Tshegofatso, 38 said she was still dazed and confused as to how her trusted boyfriend who has demonstrated nothing but love for the children could be accused of such a heinous crime.
He is alleged to have kept the children quite for so long by threatening to kill the them if they squealed on him.
Tshegofatso who supports the family financially from her paltry poverty eradication project (Ipelegeng) earnings explained that when she first met her unemployed boyfriend it was love at first sight.
She then saw nothing wrong with inviting him to move in with the family into the one room house which they now share with her all her children.
“The girls were too scared to tell me. I heard the news from a social worker.I cried uncontrollably as I felt that I had been stabbed in the back by somebody I thought I could trust,” Tshegofatso said.
She further told of how her 13-year-old daughter, a standard seven pupil has also become HIV positive, allegedly by Mooki who normally looks after the children while she is at work.
“I didn’t see this coming, he was a difficult man to deal with but at the same time a loving boyfriend. To my face he treated those girls like his own,but behind my back he abused them.
I am also disappointed in my children for not telling me anything. Even today they are refusing to talk about it with me. They prefer to discuss the issue with social workers and not their own mother,” she said, sobbing.
Asked what could have caused all the family mess Tshegofatso blamed poverty: “We all sleep in one room. Six of us sleep together side by side..
My boyfriend and I normally wait for the children to sleep to have sex but now I suspect sometimes they wouldn’t be asleep at all when we do it,” she said.
Sikwane Police Station Commander Superintendent Ellias Malope confirmed that Mooki has been charged with a single account of rape.
He said the suspect will be arraigned at Mochudi Magistrate court after the Director of Public Prosecutions established a prima facie case against him.
The alleged molestation of the younger girl has not been reported, the police boss said.
The children refused to comment and the stepfather has since dissapered from the family home without a trace.
