There is a euphoric atmosphere amongst the Letlhakeng residents who are starved for an organized competitive sport event as the date for the annual Independence holidays athletics competition nears.
The annual race which is part of the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) calendar of events will be held next Saturday, on the 28th September.
Speaking to Voice Sport the Organizing Committee spokesperson Pontsho Pusoetsile had this to say “We came with the idea of the race in order to plough back to the area that nurtured and developed us into current professionals” he said.
“It is a pity that the Letlhakeng area which is comprised of two constituencies has no team registered and competing in any of the Botswana National Sports Council codes.”
“ We found it fit to hold an annual 15km competitive race and 5km non competitive fun run in our area as a way to market and grow the area’s profile as well as promote competitive sport,” said Pusoetsile.
Pusoetsile said the aim is to ultimately identify young talent which can be nurtured to represent the area and the nation at large in future international competitions
Pusoetsile also noted that “we are also using sport as a vehicle to promote cohesion in the community as well as aiming at reducing the societal ills such as alcoholism as during the competition we disseminate information promoting healthy lifestyles habits”.
Pusoetsile further informed Voice Sport that the race is sponsored by the community through contributions with the larger share of the sponsorship coming from the Bromo Catering Services & Restaurant and Mr Kablay Motseonageng of the Busy Bee Complex who annually contributes P5000 towards the race.
Quizzed further by Voice Sport the main sponsors Busy Bee Complex representative Mr Thuto Omphile Mothibakgomo said that “we are extremely happy to be associated with the race since it helps us to attain our community social responsibility objectives and also assist us to brand our business entity” said Mothibakgomo.
On his part the Botswana Athletics Association Secretary General Mr Gilbert Keakantse noted that the race is part of the Botswana Athletics Association ideals of developing the sport.
“Competitions of this nature helps in providing our athletes with the much necessary exposure and provides the track athletes essential practice in preparations for the upcoming games added Keakantse.”
The race will be graced by the Ombudsman Mrs Festinah Bakwena who will be the main guest, as well the Letlhakeng Sub District Assistant District Commissioner Mr George Mogome and the Sub-Council Chairperson Mr Frction Leuwe.
The race is expected to attract reputable long distance athletes amongst others Omphemetse Selagaboy who will be defending the title he scooped as a Champion on the senior male’s category during the 2012 edition and on the female’s senior category veteran Onkemetse Solotate is expected to show her mettle against upcoming youth athletes such as Kefilwe Galeitsiwe.
The registration fee for the 15km race is P30 with the Non-Competitive Fun run registration being P20.
