Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) handed over sponsorship to the tune of P654, 908. 23 to Thapong Visual Arts Centre.
The centre was formed in 1999 with the aim of promoting visual arts in Botswana.
It is a membership organisation currently with 700 registered artists.
The centre develops contemporary arts, helps artists pursue careers in art and educates artists through art workshops focused on drawing, painting, sculpture and print-making.
Members of Thapong are based in different parts of the country but meet and interact primarily during events like art exhibitions and workshops.
The DTCB sponsorship will go towards the refurbishment of the Thapong art gallery with the aim of creating an art gallery of international standards and size, which will accommodate and promote artworks from local, regional and international artists.
This development will also bring together crafts people, visual artists and potters under one roof to share their expertise and experiences.
Speaking at the event, Kago Mmopi, the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager of DTC Botswana said, “once complete, the facility will strengthen the visibility of Botswana artists and through the sale of art pieces, contribute to economic development of the country.
The gallery will undoubtedly help in the diversification of the economy of the country and also tell the great story of the arts in Botswana.”
The refurbishment project will commence during the month of September and the new art gallery is expected to be opened at the end of November 2013.
