It was supposed to be an intense training session on Wednesday, just three days before the Zebras take on Uganda in a friendly match. But the dull affair between the Zebras and Wonder Sporting at Bank of Botswana Grounds left a lot to be desired.
The picture of Stanley Tshosane sitting alone as his depleted squad squared off with the cops, said a thousand words.
With just 16 players reporting for camp on Monday the coach and his technical team are racing against time to prepare the side for the all important clash against Bafana Bafana on 9th September in Durban.
Gaborone United, who contributes seven players to the national team, had decided not to release their players early for the training camp, opting to release them two days before the Uganda match.
Though understandable from the GU Management, this underscores the situation Tshosane and his team find themselves in. The situation will surely get worse before it gets better.
But just how do you prepare a team with 16 players?
“When you plan for a training camp, you have 22 players in mind and when they don’t report for camp it disrupts everything,” Tshosane said after the practice match against Sporting.
The coach whose tumultuous relationship with the Botswana Football Association is an open secret said it was difficult especially when they had to do drills that required two full teams.
“I don’t blame the GU Management because they are thinking about the coming season and need adequate time to prepare,” said Tshosane.
The coach further said he was concerned about some players’ match fitness who have not played in a competitive match since the end of the season.
“We have a very important game in September, so we need to work with what we have. One day all will be well,” he said though his words lacked conviction.
As he walked towards his car, his lone figure told a different story. It was a story of frustration; a story of defeat.
The Zebras take on Uganda on Saturday at the National Stadium at 1500hrs and will take on Malawi on Tuesday at 1900hrs. Tickets are priced at P50, P30 and P20 for grand stand, Panda and behind the posts respectively.
