DJ Bunz has vowed to clear his name after being accused of sexually abusing his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter.
Looking tired and strained the popular local celebrity came into The Voice offices this week to give his side of a story that has shocked the nation.
After news of his arrest and detention appeared on the front page of last week’s edition, Peter Gaetsewe aka Bunz has had to deal with the fallout from a situation he describes as a ‘living nightmare.’
The 35-year-old DJ told of how an ‘innocent accident’ led to his overnight detention in a police cell and several hours of intensive questioning.
AstonishinglyCID officerswere accusing him of having a sexual relationship with the young girl.
Detailing the background to the story Bunzdescribed how the girl had been playing with friends, clambering over a fallen tree in the garden, when she slipped and fell onto an outstretched branch.
She landed badly with the branch hitting her between the legs and injuring her private parts.
“I wasn’t at home at the time but the girl ran to my mum in tears telling her about the painful blow.
After a while she calmed down and appeared to have recovered.”
It was only the next morning whilst Bunz was bathing the girl that she cried out saying that she was again feeling pain.
“ My mum was out at the time but when she returned
I told her that there was a problem and suggested that she take the girl to hospital to see what was wrong.”
Whilst at the hospital a doctor examined the girl and apparently suspecting that her injuries could have been the result of sexual abuse, alerted CID officers.
“ I had not been in contact with my mum whilst she was at the hospital, and the next thing I knew was when CID officers came to the house around 5pm.
They informed me that they had come to pick me up for questioning.
I asked them why, but was told not to ask questions but to just get in the car and accompany them to the police station.”
Bunz was taken to Tati Town police station where to his astonishment, he was told that his girlfriend’s daughter was in the other room claimingthat he was having a sexual relationship with her.
“I told the cops that this was insane, and asked if they have any proof of the allegation such as evidence of penetration.
They didn’t respond to my questions and just said, ‘We’ll talk tomorrow,’ informing me that I was to be detained overnight.”
Bunz later learnt that the girl had never been at the police station as she was still being treated in hospital.
He also maintains that at no point did she claim that he was abusing her, but simply repeated the story of how the tree had hurt her.
After an uncomfortable night crammed into a cell with 13 other people, the interrogation resumed the following day.
Bunzwas faced with a panel of seven CID officers who grilled him for a further six hours.
“It was an extremely hostile and intimidating environment.
I couldn’t believe that I was being accused of molesting the child that I love and look after as my own daughter. But that was the reality I was facing.”
He was then read an extract from the doctor’s report in which it was indicated that a ‘semen like fluid’ was detected during the medical examination.
“ I again asked if the report showed evidence of sexual penetration and was told that this had not been found.”
It was then that Bunz requested to be taken for a DNA test to see if it matched the evidence on the medical report.
After the test he was informed that a case would be registered and he would be taken to court the next day, but the same day he was released without charge and never appeared in court.
Together with the support of his girlfriend and family Bunz has remained strong throughout his ordeal, and is dealing with it in ‘his own way.’
“ This whole affair has been totally confusing.
I have become the prime suspect in a totally innocent matter, accused of physically and sexually abusing a child in my care. It is a scary situation, but people who know me, know that I would never do such a thing.”
Now Bunz faces an agonising wait for the results of his blood test and the chance to finally clear his name.
In a brief comment his mother Cynthia Gaetsewe, expressed her concern.
“All I know is that the girl fell on a tree. I was therefore shocked when Peter was detained and questioned as a suspect.
The way this whole matter has been dealt with both by the authorities and the press is troubling,” she said.
EVERY SINGLE FATHER’S NIGHTMARE
The circumstances in which DJ Bunz finds himself the prime suspect over allegations of sexual abuse, has chilling implications.
How what appears to be an innocent accident could have led to detention in a police cell, and questioning over allegations of sexual misconduct, must be a concern to every single male responsible for the care of young children.
Bunz himself maintains that whilst the CID officers that arrested him ‘were only doing their job,’ he questions the professionalism of medical staff and social workers whose suspicions led to his detention.
“They reported detecting ‘semen like stains’ on the girl and relayed their findings to the police.
Then simply because I am the one looking after the girl, I become a prime suspect.”
He blames the doctor and nurses who examined the girl for not ‘doing their homework.’
“How could they make such a reference?
The girl had simply been injured whilst climbing over a tree, but now they report having discovered ‘semen like stains.’
That expression has put me into a lot of trouble – either they found evidence of semen or the stains were a result of a discharge from the wound.
Their examination should have been more thorough and less confusing,” he maintained.
“There was no evidence of sexual penetration and the girl herself never made those accusations, but their misleading report resulted in my arrest and detention.
That is not fair. What happened to me could happen to any single parent in charge of youngsters - it is a scary situation.”
Commenting on the case Assistant Tatitown Police Commander, Superintended GaolapelwePhaphe has confirmed that investigations into allegations of sexual and physical abuse being leveled against Peter Gaetsewe are ongoing.
The police boss said he was released from police custody pending DNA test results. Phaphe said no charge has been preferred against DJ Bunz and he is yet to appear before a judicial officer.
“Ongoing investigations into the matter will establish the offense likely to be preferred against the suspect,” said Phaphe.
