Poor old happy chap pins hope on Khama’s Housing Appeal Scheme.
Living alone is not a problem for old man Basinyi Nini of Natale village near Francistown.
All he needs is a proper shelter.
At the age of 85, the bachelor has been living alone for over 10 years.
A relative left him in the house which is now falling apart because of poor maintenance.
He fears it’s only a matter of time before the structure collapses over his head.
A fervent believer in God, Nini says he prays day and night for his turn to benefit from President Ian Khama’s Housing Appeal Scheme.
“If only the government could consider building a reasonable house for me, I would be very grateful,” the old man said.
“I have been waiting for years to receive my blessing, but it seems people will only act after disaster strikes.” he continued
Sitting in front of the dilapidated structure, the jovial Nini said people should not take him for granted.
“I am desperate for shelter. I can’t live in this oven. It’s hot inside and it’s a matter of time before I am found roasted inside if no one comes to my rescue,” he said pointing at the shack.
The structure, according to Nini, was built for him by the Village Development Committee (VDC) using plastic bags. “Whenever I keep food inside, it rots quickly,” Nini said laughing.
Nini who has a great sense of humour joked, “I am one man, one mission and I am now used to staying alone. I don’t want to take any nonsense from anyone including women.”
To fight boredom Nini reads the Bible or visits neighbours. Nini who is a beneficiary of government’s old age pension maintains he leads a happy life in solitude.
