Inmate hangs himself and girl drowns in hotel swimming pool
The 29-year-old man from Motoko ward in Charleshill used a wire to kill himself behind Prison rooms.
Gantsi Acting Station Commander Assistant Superintendent Batsho Muzola said that the deceased was remanded on July 8 for a murder case.
He was mentally challenged, Muzola said.
On how he managed to hang himself in a supposedly well monitored facility, Muzola said the act happened during recreational time when many inmates were playing soccer outside.
“Some of the Prison Guards were escorting inmates who were playing football outside while others were at the garden.”
The deceased who had killed a man with a log was to appear for mention on July 22 at Ghanzi Magistrate Court.
In a different case, Muzola said police in the same village were investigating a case in which a 19-year-old mentally challenged girl from Xabo settlement drowned in a swimming pool at Tautona Lodge.
He said the deceased had attended a workshop for disabled people with her 49-year-old father when she ended up drowning.
“She left the conference room with a friend to go to to the toilet and ended up dead in a swimming pool,” Muzola said.
Although the incident happened during the day, the victim was only found the following day at around 1500 hours.
“That lodge is 5km away from town centre and there are wild animals there. Again the pool is too close to the toilets and someone who is mentally challenged can easily drown because it’s not covered,” Muzola said.
Tautona Lodge Manager refused to comment except to say he did not have a mandate to talk to the media.
