“WE ARE GOING THERE TO WIN THE CUP”-KENNETH MOGAE
Botswana national football team the Zebras left for Zambia on Thursday for the Castle COSAFA Cup tournament.
Ahead of the team’s departure assistant coach Kenneth Mogae said they are going into the tournament to win it for the first time.
The team has been pitted in the same group with Kenya, Swaziland and Lesotho.
The Zebras do not have a good record in the regional tournament as they usually fail to progress beyond the group stages.
The team’s best performance was in 2009 where they lost 0-1 to Zimbabwe in the knockout stages.
Zebras drew 0-0 with Comoros in their first match and went on to register 1-0 and 2-0 victories against Swaziland and Seychelles to finish as group leaders.
“Zimbabwe if you recall went on to win the tournament,” said Mogae.
The national side will however be without their South African based players due to club commitments.
However DRC based duo of Dirang Moloi and Jerome Ramatlhakwane will make the trip. A few new faces have been roped in to replace the missing SA based stars.
These include Gift Moyo, Mosha Gaolaolwe, Mwampule Masule and Topo Piet.
Mogae said the tournament has come at the right time where Zebras has been given a new lease of life in the World Cup Qualifiers.
Stan’s charges were awarded three points by FIFA to take their tally to seven points, one less than South Africa.
This follows FIFA investigation of Ethiopia who was found guilty of using a defaulter in the two nations match last month.
This means the Zebras will still have something to play for in their last match against Bafana Bafana in September.
“This tournament will give our boys the much needed match practice.
Dirang as you know has only played two competitive matches and this tournament will help him gel with the other players,” he said.
The Zebras kicks off their campaign against Swaziland on Sunday at 1700hrs and will take on Lesotho on Tuesday.
While both sides have never given Stanley Tshosane’s team any problems there is however doubts that the technical team may have not made time to study their opponents.
Swaziland has assembled a formidable side that was unlucky to lose 1-0 to Angola in African Nations Championships (CHANA) last Sunday.
Lesotho opted to remain with the tried and tested squad that campaigned well in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
The Zebras closes their group matches against Kenya on Thursday at 1500hrs. All Zebras’ Cosafa Castle Cup games will be shown Live on SS4.
Zebras team list: Mwampule Masule, Noah Maposa, Michael Pepukani, Mompati Thuma, Ndiyapo Letsholathebe, Oscar Ncenga, Edwin Olerile, Tshepo Motlhabankwe, Dirang Moloi, Jackie Mothatego, Topo Piet, Alphonse Modisaotsile, Phenyo Mongala, 18-Mosha Gaolaolwe, Lemponye Tshireletso, Moemedi Moatlhaping, 9-Jerome Ramatlhakwana, -Gift Moyo, Gaopatwe Seosenyeng and Pako Lekgari.
