HOT LINE-UP FOR DURBAN JULY
Fashionistas will be out in full force for this year’s Durban July this weekend.
The flamboyant and crazy outfits will be in full display during the posh event.
While the fashion parade and horse racing have always been the key attraction one cannot ignore the interesting line-up of musicians and DJs at this year’s event.
The 5FM Official Vodacom Durban July after party will be hosted at The Wave House in Gateway.
This party promises to be a sizzler judging by the line-up of Milkshake, Euphonik, Locnville and Funky G to name a few.
5FM will broadcast the party live on Saturday night. MTV and Fish Eagle are also hosting a spectacular MTV Eagle Air themed Village at the Durban July, to create a getaway at the racecourse comprising of six giant inflatable domes.
An impressive line-up of artists and DJs such as Mafikizolo and Liquideep will grace the domes and Comedy Central will provide a special stand-up comedy zone.
The village will be open from 10:00 to 22:00 on the 6th of July, giving you a little bit of everything throughout the day.
I was totally taken aback by the amazing talent I saw in Francistown this past weekend.
I think staying in Gabz too long can blind one to the fact that there are other talented artists out there who might not be receiving media attention that they deserve.
I visited a number of joints in the Ghetto and the Djs were just amazing.
I just do not know why these guys are not up there with the rest of their GC based colleagues.
For shows like Feta de La Musique, St Louis Music Fest and others that give opportunities to local artists perhaps the time has come to cast your net far.
DJ Bunz, who has been the best for so many years has sowed seeds that need to be nurtured. Ghetto rocks!
DT CLOSES THE GAP
While it would have been easy for DT to do a mix of a popular folk song from either Mahlathini or Mtukudzi he opted to remake Afro Sunshine’s ‘Tote’ and he should be commended for that.
In a recent interview with one of the local veterans Clement Jackson, he said the trend for young local artists to opt for South African songs or even American classics is due to the brain drain which was caused by the deaths of so many veteran artists at an alarming rate.
This death resulted in many groups dying a natural death and youngsters were forced to look for inspiration abroad.
Tote is my all time favourite and it would really be nice to bring back such songs like “Mabasket” and give them a modern feel.
Nice move DT and a beautiful video too.
HE IS FINALLY HERE
Joe Thomas, the R n B hot shot is in town.
The “Table for two” hit maker will headline KBL’s 40th anniversary.
After the failed attempt to stop the show from progressing by an aggrieved promoter the smooth singer will be here to serve the entertainment starved locals.
Famous for albums like ‘The Good, the bad and the ugly, My name is Joe, the singer is expected to sample new stuff from his latest offering “Double back:
Evolution of RnB.” What a way to start the month of July.
