A male art teacher is facing assault charges for beating a female student black and blue with a stick on the butt.
The form 3 student Thato Ntwaetsile was whopped so hard that she was forced to take leave from school for a week to recover from the beating.
She could not sit down.
The traumatised 15- year -old says the teacher used a stick with spikes to lash the whole Art class for failure to submit Art assignment on time.
“We went to school early Monday and attended classes as usual.
We were later informed that our usual teacher won’t be coming in for classes but later a substitute teacher came in and upon inspection of how far we were with our teacher he noticed that we had not yet completed our projects and that is when he became fierce.”
Fighting her emotions, the student explained how the teacher repeatedly thrashed in an anger frenzy.
“He kept on beating me. He told me that if I stopped to scratch my back he would start counting the number of lashes he had administered from the beginning.
He ended lashing me five times.”
The abused girl”s mother, Keiteretse Ntwaetsile (37) told The Voice that she has already lodged and assault case against the teacher at the Broadhurst Police station.
“Even if my child had not done her assignment it didn’t give the teacher any right to abuse her.”
Broadhurst station commander Bonosi Molapisi said they were investigating the matter.
The school head Mbakiso Madzete could not be drawn into discussing the matter.
Child line Botswana has on several times condemned Government for instilling corporal punishment in schools because apart from it being an abusive, Botswana is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
